To impress her sister, the young soldier Isaac wants to force the grumpy Edith to try her luck at the bowling alley. But when he playfully pulls her off her chair, Edith sinks limply to the floor. Only now does Isaac discover the wheelchair parked to the side. Shame-stricken, Isaac wants to correct the image the sisters have of him. He endeavours to help Edith and his impulsive nature gives the recently injured woman new courage to face life. His friendship with Edith gives Isaac purpose and when she falls in love with him, he enters into a relationship with her. But her growing mistrust and his obsession with curing her lead to an intoxicating maelstrom that drags everyone into disaster.
