Alle Jahre wieder is a unique portrait of the director’s home town on the eve of the emerging 1968 movement. Director Schamoni captures the city’s important squares and buildings, its pubs and churches. Nothing is brought along, everything becomes a prop. Above all, however, Schamoni is interested in the people: Lead actor Hans Dieter Schwarze was born in Münster and began his theatre career in 1946 at the municipal theatre. The music teacher in the film, the pub owner and the museum guide are Münster residents who virtually play themselves. The film tells the story of advertising copywriter Hannes Lücke (Hans Dieter Schwarze), who lives and works in Frankfurt but travels to Münster every year at Christmas time to spend the festive season with his wife (Ulla Jacobsson) and children and to meet old friends. He is accompanied by his young girlfriend Inge (Sabine Sinjen), with whom he secretly stays at the hotel. Every Year Again wins the Silver Bear at the 1967 Berlinale and three national film awards. In Münster, this timeless film classic is shown every year during the Christmas season at the filmclub münster in the Schloßtheater.
For the exhibition, Münster celebrities, innkeepers and other citizens of today as well as participants from the past were photographed at the historical film locations in key scenes from Alle Jahre wieder. The new photos are juxtaposed with the historical film scenes.
The photographs could be viewed for the first time in the Münster City Museum in winter 2021/22. They were supplemented by unique contemporary documents relating to the film, such as the personal copy of the original screenplay by lead actor Hans Dieter Schwarze, including handwritten changes to the dialogue, as well as the historical robe of the Dean of Münster, in which he held his memorable Christmas mass in the Überwasserkirche.
The exhibits from the physical exhibition have been completely digitised and form the basis for the VR exhibition, which not only provides worldwide access to a fascinating piece of film history, but also makes an important contribution to the preservation of film heritage.
We show first insights into the VR exhibition, which will be on display at Münster City Museum from November 2026, and talk to those responsible for the project.
